About Us

  • We are located in Iowa City, Iowa, with an area population of over 80,000.
  • We are part of an integrated academic medical center called University of Iowa Health Care that also includes the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and UI Physicians, Iowa’s largest multi-specialty medical and surgical group practice.
  • We are dedicated to promoting the health of all Iowans through innovative care, excellent service, and exceptional outcomes.
  • Most of our patients are from Iowa, and from every county within the state, but we also serve patients from every state and many other nations.
  • Our specialized multidisciplinary care is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  • Our multidisciplinary expertise encompasses more than 200 health care specialties and is typically provided by teams of physicians, nurses, technologists, therapists, pharmacists, dietitians, social workers, and other staff.

History

The first University Hospital opened with 50 beds on Jan. 11, 1898. A new 735-bed General Hospital opened in 1928. In the current 684-bed facility, we provide world-class health care, patient- and family-centered services, and advanced technologies.

Teaching

  • Educating future health care professionals is an essential part of the UI Hospitals and Clinics mission
  • Nearly 700 resident and fellow physicians and dentists help provide premier patient care around the clock
  • We are the clinical training base for students from the colleges of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, and public health
  • Our clinical departments collaborate to conduct accredited health professional education programs in diagnostic medical sonography, dietetics, nuclear medicine technology, perfusion, physician assistant training, physical therapy, radiation sciences, radiation therapy, and radiologic technology
  • We provide supervised clinical settings for Kirkwood Community College programs in nursing education, surgical technology, and respiratory therapy
  • We are home to the only emergency medicine residency program in Iowa

  • Four parking ramps serve patients, families, and visitors; outpatients park free for clinic visits
  • Guest Services staff provide patients with valet parking, patient escorts, and concierge services
