Visiting Residents and Fellows Policies

Policy

Residents and fellows from other training programs may be allowed to do an elective rotation at UI Hospitals and Clinics if mutually approved by each program. Whenever arrangements are made for a physician from another residency or fellowship program to visit one of our programs, the following rules apply:

Temporary House Staff Appointment Contract
All visiting House Staff must complete and sign two Temporary House Staff contracts and need to be provided with a copy of the current Hospital "Bylaws". Programs will need to print the contract and send to the resident or fellow for signatures.

The visiting resident or fellow should send back to the program the two original contracts for signatures.

The Clinical Service Head/Department Chair who approves the rotation must sign the Temporary House Staff contracts after the visiting resident or fellow signs them.

Once both signatures have been obtained by the Clinical Service Head and the visiting resident or fellow, the contracts should then be submitted to the Graduate Medical Education Office.

The Graduate Medical Education Office will obtain the signature of the Director of Graduate Medical Education.

One original contract will be filed in the GME Office. The second original will be returned to the visiting resident or fellow and a copy will be provided to the Department.

In addition to the temporary contract, other required documentation needed for the visiting resident or fellow’s file includes:

  • State Medical License – The visiting resident or fellow must have a current resident/or permanent physician medical license from their home state. If the visiting resident or fellow does not have a valid state license, they will need to apply for a temporary resident physician license prior to training in Iowa.  It takes a minimum of 45 days to obtain a resident license in Iowa. There are absolutely no circumstances in which a visiting physician can be involved in the care of patients without a valid state medical license. A copy of the state medical license must be attached to the contract sent to the GME Office for the contract to be valid.
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • ECFMG certificate, if applicable

Stipends and Benefits of the Visiting Resident or Fellow

  • Continuing provision of stipend support and fringe benefits is the responsibility of the visiting resident or fellow’s home institution unless alternative arrangements are approved in advance.
  • Professional liability coverage is provided under the Iowa State Tort Claims Act, Chapter 669, Code of Iowa during the elective rotation.  This coverage is secondary to any other professional liability insurance coverage maintained by the resident or fellow or by his/her primary institution during the rotation.

Photo ID Badge

  • A complimentary appointment must be made in the department.
  • The department must arrange for the visiting resident or fellow to obtain a photo ID badge through the Hospital Human Resources Office. The position title to be used is Visiting Resident or Visiting Fellow.

Transportation and Lodging

  • Transportation to and from Iowa City and lodging within Iowa City are the financial responsibility of the visiting resident or fellow unless alternative arrangements are approved in advance.

Meals

  • Visiting residents or fellows may purchase meals on a cash basis in any UI Hospitals and Clinics dining facility and will receive discounted staff prices if wearing their UI Hospitals and Clinics photo ID badge.

House Staff Health Screening

  • A background check, documentation of one TB test obtained within one year of the current date, and one TB test administered at University Employee Health Clinic must be obtained by the Visiting Resident/Fellow prior to any patient contact/care at this hospital.
