About Us

A welcome from
Ann Williamson, PhD, RN, CNAA, BC
Associate Vice President for Nursing, UI Health Care
Chief Nursing Officer, UI Hospitals and Clinics

Welcome to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care. I invite you to imagine yourself as an employee in our Magnet hospital. We are proud to have been awarded Magnet designation in 2004 by the Magnet Recognition Program® which recognizes excellence in nursing services nationally and internationally. Members of our nursing staff work in many settings and roles, providing high quality patient- and family-centered care in an environment that supports and promotes the health and well-being of our patients as well as our staff. Our unique and comprehensive ergonomics program is a testament to our level of support for both patients and staff.

Our nurses play an integral role in the UI Health Care community—a partnership among UI Carver College of Medicine, UI Hospitals and Clinics, and UI Physicians. We also partner with the UI College of Nursing and together, recently opened a state-of-the-art Nursing Clinical Education Center located in the hospital.

At UI Hospitals and Clinics, our nurses are committed to finding the best ways to provide the finest care to our patients while using the most sophisticated technology and equipment. And, because we are part of an academic medical center, our nurses have unique professional and learning experiences available to them:

  • We have the opportunity to expand our knowledge and expertise in a wide range of clinical areas and work collaboratively with experts in nursing, medicine, and other health care professions.

  • We are invited to participate in nursing, medical, and other professional research activities, learn new procedures, and use the latest technology. We are on the cutting edge of new treatment modalities.

  • We can expand our knowledge in nursing informatics, including online documentation that enhances staff communication while providing data for clinical decision making, quality improvement, education, and research activities.

At UI Hospitals and Clinics, patient and staff education is a primary objective. Our qualified Advanced Practice Nurses and unit clinical experts are available to mentor members of our staff. UI Hospitals and Clinics offers high caliber continuing education programs along with frequent in-service programs at the unit and divisional levels. In addition, we support our nurses in their pursuit of advanced degrees through a tuition reimbursement program.

We work with the University of Iowa College of Nursing to expand nursing knowledge, to promote clinical scholarship, and to increase recognition and support for the faculty and staff within the university environment. Faculty at the UI College of Nursing have an adjunct appointment as academic associates at UI Hospitals and Clinics in the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care. I invite you to learn more about how our health care team demonstrates their commitment to excellence in patient care. If you feel you have what it takes to become a UI Hospitals and Clinics nurse, please submit an application for a position by filling out our online application or by contacting Nursing Human Resources for additional information.
