Clinical Pastoral Education

Faculty

Clinical pastoral education combines theology with professional education to help students use their the pastoral role to provide spiritual care to persons in crisis.

Clinical Pastoral Education was conceived by Dr. Richard Cabot as a way of learning pastoral practice in a clinical setting under supervision. The Rev. Anton Boisen enlarged the concept to include a case study method, studying the "living human document." The program integrates a knowledge of medicine, ethics, and the behavioral sciences into pastoral practice.

By reviewing complicated life situations from differing points of view, students gain new insights and understandings about the human situation. Theological reflection is an important part of the review process in helping students integrating theological understandings with life experience.

The goal of the program is that, in addition to learning pastoral skills, the student works to become pastoral through identifying and building upon his or her unique personality and gifts.
