Medical Minute: April 2004
New UI Maternity Center/NICU
This Medical Minute is brought to you as a public service by KCRG-TV9 and
University of Iowa Health Care.
The new UI Maternity Center combines comprehensive care with a family-friendly
atmosphere. New parents can enjoy spacious rooms and luxurious amenities,
along with the peace of mind that comes with the region’s most advanced
team of specialists.
"If a baby is born here with a problem will have a better survival than
if a baby is born elsewhere and transferred here," says Jennifer Niebyl,
M.D., head of the UI Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The UI Maternity
Center is adjacent to Iowa’s only comprehensive neonatal
intensive care unit (NICU). Each private room includes the advanced technology
important to a baby’s recovery, while maintaining a home-like environment
for the family.
"We believe that enabling the parents to comfortably be with the baby more
of the time improves the baby’s outcomes," says Edward Bell,
M.D., NICU director.
