Safety for all children should be convenient, accessible, and affordable. That wasn’t always the case, but it is now. University of Iowa Children’s Hospital has introduced the Safety Store and Safe Escape Program, featuring safety
products and education for children across Iowa, including those with special health care needs.
Information is available on:
- Transportation safety, including car seats, seat belt use, bikes, and pedestrians
- Fire, home, and water safety
- Poison prevention
- Safety and evacuation methods for children with special health care and educational needs
The Safety Store’s inventory includes medical ID bracelets, bath accessories, booster seats, car seats, outlet plugs, smoke detectors, safety gates, drawer latches, doorknob covers, and child tracking devices as well as hard-to-find items for children with special health care needs, including evacuation mats and wheelchair ponchos.
There is no cost to participate in the program and the items in the Safety Store are sold at reduced rates.
Pam Hoogerwerf, community services coordinator for Patient and Family Centered Services at UI Children’s Hospital, said the Safe Escape Program focuses on making adaptable products and education materials available to children with mobility and sensory issues.
