Acute Pharmaceutical Care

Acute Pharmaceutical Care satellite

Comprehensive patient-centered pharmaceutical care is provided by both decentralized patient care unit-based and satellite-based clinical pharmacists. Pharmacists participate in a wide range of clinical services and activities through interactions with patients, physicians and other health-care team members. These services include participation in medical team rounds, extensive patient-specific medication therapy monitoring, consultation with the medical staff regarding medication-related issues, and provision of drug information. Clinical areas served include: Solid Organ Transplantation, Cardiology, Hematology/Oncology, Neurology/Neurosurgery, Trauma/Burn Unit, General Internal Medicine, Pediatric Intensive Care, and Psychiatry. In addition, clinical pharmacists also serve as preceptors for Doctor of Pharmacy clerkship and externship students.

Clinical Pharmacy Specialists provide patient-centered pharmaceutical care on inpatient units such as the Surgical and Medical Intensive Care Units, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, and Adult and Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplantation.  They also serve clinic populations in the specialized areas of pain management, heart failure, and cardiac transplantation. Clinical Pharmacy Specialists also serve as preceptors for Doctor of Pharmacy clerkship students as well as Pharmacy Practice Residents and specialized Residents.

Drug distribution is highly automated on the patient care units where the Pyxis Medstation 2000 medication cabinets have been installed. UIHC also utilizes the Pyxis Homerus robot for centralized filling of patient medication carts.
