PGY1 Pharmacy Residency

The Department of Pharmaceutical Care at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics offers an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists accredited PGY-1 Residency. Patient focused care is emphasized in this comprehensive training program conducted in a large health care system. This 12-month program provides the necessary opportunities for highly motivated pharmacists to achieve their professional goals. The residency is designed to develop the skills required to solve the complex medication related problems presented in health care today. Rotations enhance the expertise of the resident in: management of drug therapy for acute and ambulatory patients; drug information services; management of pharmacy services; population based drug therapy; and drug policy. Elective time is available for individualizing the program to meet the resident's interests and career needs.

PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Experiences

During pharmacy residency rotations, the resident participates in all aspects of patient medication use therapy including selection, assessment, monitoring, reconciliation, safety, and adherence. The resident will work as a part of the multidisciplinary team advising physicians, nurses, and patients on appropriate medication use; attending rounds and conferences; and providing lectures on drug therapy to medical, pharmacy, and nursing staff. Required pharmacy practice activities include:

Acute Care Rotations Residents are required to complete rotations in each of the following areas: internal medicine, critical care, pediatrics, and surgery. This core group of rotations is intended to provide a well-rounded learning experience for the resident. The specific patient care services in which each of these rotations takes place, either general or specialty areas, will be tailored to each resident's interest and needs, as well as being based upon previous experience.

Pharmacy Practice Management A rotation in pharmacy practice management provides each resident experience in management of comprehensive pharmacy services.

Drug Information A rotation in the drug information center introduces residents to researching the literature and responding to calls that come into the center.

Medication Use Evaluation A rotation in drug therapy policy development introduces residents to performing medication use evaluations, as well as participating in drug therapy policy development.

Longitudinal Ambulatory Clinic Each resident provides service in the Anticoagulation Case Management Service clinic on a weekly basis. During clinic time, residents are responsible for monitoring and adjusting patient's anticoagulants based upon lab values and conversations with the patients. Residents may also elect to complete an ambulatory care clinical rotation in one of the many ambulatory clinics where clinical pharmacy services are provided.

Staffing Residents are assigned to work two weekends (2 days/weekend) out of every five weeks in a decentralized pharmacy satellite to augment their experience in pharmacy operations and drug distribution.

Research Each resident is required to complete a research project. Working with the program director and preceptors, the resident will identify a project that is of interest and importance to patient care. The residency project is identified early in the year and a final report is required.

Teaching All residents are appointed as adjunct faculty with the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. Residents participate in Introductory Learning Experiences with P1 students, as well as in the teaching the Clinical Professional Skills course and precepting students during clerkship rotations.
