The Department of Pharmaceutical
Care has a staff of approximately 90 pharmacists and 120 technical and
administrative support personnel who provide a wide variety of
patient care, educational, and research-related services. The pharmacists and support personnel provide
comprehensive pharmaceutical care to acute and ambulatory
patients supported by a network of seven acute care satellites, central
pharmacy, sterile product processing area, drug information
center, and four ambulatory care pharmacies.
Both ambulatory and inpatient drug distribution is highly
automated to support safe medication use.
The department has active medication use evaluation and
outcomes management programs, participates in the maintenance
of the Iowa Statewide Poison
Control Center in partnership with St. Luke's Regional
Medical Center in Sioux City, provides external
pharmacy services to other Iowa hospitals on a contractual
basis, serves as a primary teaching
site for the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, and has
well-established pharmacy residency programs.
